The first race of the 2015 Salomon Trail Running Series was enjoyed by 1,500 chilly but happy trail runners on Sunday 21 June. It was just 2 degrees when runners arrived at the Event Expo and energy levels were high as they bobbed around trying to keep warm before the races started.

New trail runners seemed to dominate the trails with several races won by people making the transition from road running to trail running.

The Medium Course female winner was local runner Natasha Key from Kew Ease in 45 minutes, 37 seconds.

Nadine Barnes, the female winner of the Long Course, had driven all the way from Mt Beauty in Victoria’s alpine region to take part in the event.

“I feel like I want to cry, I’m so happy. It’s my first time at the series; it’s a really good atmosphere and everyone was so friendly,” said Nadine, who finished in 1 hour, 42 seconds.

In the Short Course however, it was a couple of familiar faces who crossed the finish line first.

Rebecca Rosel was the winning female of the Medium Course for last year’s Series and this year is taking on the Short Course with gusto.

“The Short Course is so much fun and conditions were perfect,” said Rebecca as she gasped for breath after taking the win in just 17 minutes and 57 seconds, just 28 seconds behind the male winner.

However it’s not just about the winners at the Salomon Trail Running Series, it’s about having fun and enjoying the off-road adventure of trail running. There were plenty of smiling faces around the course and at the finish line as runners of all levels enjoyed the trails alongside the Yarra River.

The Salomon Trail Running Series moves to Plenty Gorge in Yellow Gum Park for Race 2 on Sunday 19 July. Entries for the event have already hit 1,000 participants and it’s expected to reach the field limit of 1,500 well before race day.

Race 3 in the Dandenong Ranges will be held at the popular Silvan course on Sunday 16 August. Race 4 – the grand finale event – will once again be held at the seaside township of Anglesea on the Great Ocean Road, on Sunday 20 September in conjunction with the Surf Coast Century 100km on the Saturday.
